A British citizen has been arrested in Namibia for suspected underage sexual abuse and taking naked photos of them.
Douglas Robert Brooke is also accused of touching children inappropriately while on vacation in Central Namibia.
Police said the suspect is aimed at young boys and girls from the indigenous population in the central region of Otjozondjup.
The 65-year-old Briton is facing 38 charges, including rape, indecent attack and exploitation of children, local media reported.
The British citizen, who arrived in Namibia last week for a vacation, is yet to meet the accusations.
He was arrested on Sunday after luring 34 young children with sweets and money to take pictures while they were naked.
Maureen Mbeha, head of the regional police, told the state media that a tourist sexually abused 16 teenage girls and 14 boys.
It is reported that some of the naked photos of the children were found in the camera of the British, which were confiscated by police after his arrest.
He appeared in the Grootfontein Magistrate Court, north of the capital, Windhoek, on Tuesday, where he was denied a guarantee and left in custody, the Namibia agency said.
The case was adjourned to the next month after the state prosecutor asked for more time for investigations.
“The tourist remains at the police arrest,” information minister Emma Theofel told the BBC.
The UK Embassy in Namibia said there was no “information outside the media reported”.
In a statement, the Namibia Ministry of Environment and Tourism said the actions were “deeply disrespectful to the cultural heritage of the San Community”.
“For every visitor, foreign or local, it is that every visitor is to operate or objectify the indigenous communities or their children for any purpose, including photography,” said a statement cited by InformmanTé.
The South African country is a popular tourist destination for its breathtaking desert landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
