This isn't your typical car HUD: check out the Hyundai Mobis' holographic windshield display

CNET's Bridget Carey took a look at Hyundai Mobis' new holographic display at CES 2025

One of the biggest problems with having a bunch of screens in your car is that it's a distraction when you're trying to drive. Well, I'm trying out a concept car from Hyundai Mobis that puts everything on the windshield in a new type of technology. This is not a typical HUD. It uses projectors to show me information, and the passenger can't see these things, and I can't see what the passenger sees. So here at CES, this little demonstration. Kind of showing me seeing my MPH hovering here in front of me. If I move my head, it's gone. It's kind of like a weird little magic effect because what it does is it projects the image onto a special film right here and what makes it unique compared to other things is that it controls the light in different ways. For example, if you're driving in the sun and it's really bright, it won't affect it. I can't test that here, but that's how they explain it. Technology for me. OK, so now I see, you know how fast I'm traveling, what the speed limit is. I get directions there and I can tell you what kind of music I listen to. If I wanted, I can put even more. I can put in the time but if I change the band then it starts giving me other mirrors. Oh look, right there I can see, oh, who's going up on my left, what's on my right, and I can get a different field of view from the cameras that are around the car if you want navigation. Services that you can project and keep your eyes on the road if you want some kind of mapping system to be able to see you know where you are going on your journey. It's all just kind of layered over everything. I don't really change my focus that much. I mean, in this instance I'm looking at a television screen, obviously I'm not really driving, but I'm looking ahead and I'm just turning my eyes down ever so slightly and I'm not wildly looking around the car or turning my head. Too much for me to see where I'm going, so there are some interesting safety features here. I'm not a big fan of too many screens in a car. I think they are distracting. So this is a step in the right direction. Also, what's also interesting is that the passenger can't see how fast I'm driving. Ever been a passenger and kind of want to figure out what the driver is doing, you won't be able to get that in this concept because there's nothing on the dash. It's all mine. Little secret here. So while I am focused on the road, the passenger can do things like watching movies, playing games. We've seen an example where someone plays the game through an app connection on their phone, so they can do whatever they want and I'll never know. With this SOIS concept, they have other ways they can take the technology to another level. Let's say I feel like I'm a little stressed or maybe someone is taking a nap on the road. Well, they have other kinds of technologies so they can hook into your brain waves and say, hey, maybe if I'm a little stressed or a little sleepy, this display can tell me something to help me wake up or they they can even adjust the lighting or the vibrations and heat of my seat or the music to help me be more focused or less stressed on the road. Another thing you might not be able to tell from just watching at home is that this. The screen on which it is projected is up to 95% transparent. You know, I shouldn't have it all the way through, you know, but I can still see it through. I'm looking across the road now. I see the crosswalk. I see the dotted lines. It's not like a computer screen that takes up everything. I know it's just a concept, but as someone who doesn't buy cars with screens, you know what? I can dig this. Tell me what you think.
