At the age of 41, Shoji Morimoto has transformed an ironic twist of fate into a thriving career. After being fired from a previous job in 2018 for a lack of initiative, Morimoto has found success as a “for-hire” assistant business in Japan that seeks non-romantic collaboration, according to a report by CNBC.
In 2023 alone, Morimoto's unconventional career could earn him approximately $80,000 (about Rs. 69 lakh), showcasing a unique solution for people seeking company without the pressure of engaging in conversation or activity. His services are remarkably versatile, accommodating requests from attending events to assisting clients in mundane tasks.
Among his various roles, Morimoto's tasks include:
– Cheering on marathon runners from the finish line
– Participating in video calls while clients rearrange their living space
– Attending concerts on behalf of clients who cannot make it, allowing friends to enjoy events without feeling alone
Morimoto prides himself on his straightforward approach; He fulfills the client's requests with minimal intervention, establishing one clear limit: no sexual services.
Reflecting on his experiences, Morimoto shared, “I've faced objectively difficult situations like standing in line under the sun or attending parties full of strangers.” Despite the challenges, he loves the unique situations his job presents. “I can still appreciate it,” he noted.
Morimoto's notable experience was an extensive 17-hour journey on the Yamanote Railway in Tokyo, covering thirteen laps from dawn to the last train. He often listens to clients during difficult times, providing a compassionate presence without judgment or unsolicited advice.
Operating on a pay-as-you-go model, Morimoto receives about 1,000 requests annually, allowing customers to decide their payment. Previously, he charged between 10,000 and 30,000 yen ($65 to $195) for a 2-3 hour session, his flexibility contributing to his appeal.
“I don't know if this model is sustainable, I'm just having fun exploring it,” he said.
