A Brazilian tourist, who fell while walking near the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia, was found dead, her family and rescuers reported.
Juliana Marins experienced the initial fall from a rock during a hike from an early morning group on a steep path of the Rinjani Mountain, with rescuers reporting that they hear their screams for help on Saturday.
But efforts to reach the 26-year-old in the coming days were hindered by the extreme terrain and foggy weather, according to the Indonesian authorities.
After a complicated rescue operation, the teams finally reached her body on Tuesday, her family said in a statement about social media.
“With great sadness, we inform you that she has not survived,” said Marins' family. “We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of attachment and support that we have received.”
Marins had dropped around Thailand and Vietnam before arriving on Lombok Island, Indonesia.
She was touring the second highest volcano in Indonesia with five friends and a leader on Saturday around 6:30 local time (11:30 pm Friday) when authorities said it fell from “Rock that surrounds the path to the volcano crater.”
A member of the group told Brazilian television that the terrain is slippery, the climb “very difficult” and visibility is poor.
Shots with drones and other videos captured by tourists that are distributed online and worn by Brazilian media also seem to show that they are cheating on it but alive and moving on Saturday. She was seen sitting and moving around in gray soil, far under a pedestrian walkway.
But the rescuers could not find her when they went down 300 meters (984 feet) to where they believed she was, nor she answered when they called her.
By Sunday morning, drone footage showed that it was no longer in the same place, said authorities in a park, which added that thick fog had prevented the rescue efforts and had influenced the use of a thermal drone.
On Monday, rescuers were able to find Marins again, who seemed to have fallen even more, but they had to stop the work due to the “climatic conditions”, according to the family.
The demand resumed on Tuesday and the rescuers finally reached her body after they descended 600 meters down the ravine, according to a message from the Agency to search and rescue Indonesia.
Bad weather, however, means that they have not yet extracted her body. Efforts must resume early Wednesday morning.
A total of 50 people participated in the rescue operation, the head of search and rescue Mohammed Siafi said in a statement.
The 3.726 m volcano attracts thousands of visitors every year.
However, several people have died, trying to climb it in recent years – including Malaysian tourist last month, according to Reuters news agency. The Marins family expressed concern about the fact that the path was not closed after it fell.
