The first spending measure would have extended the federal budget for fiscal year 2024 through March 14 and provided $100 billion in disaster relief for those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in the US Southeast earlier this year. The bill's size, along with several other provisions, including raising the cost of living for lawmakers, prompted a public backlash from Musk and others.
“Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this spending bill is eligible to vote for 2 years!” wrote to X.
After going back to the drawing board, House Republicans emerged Thursday with a new proposal. The revised measures would have extended the current funding freeze for three months and included a two-year debt freeze, according to Trump's request.
In addition, it has had economic relief for farmers and disaster relief of about 110 billion.
But the bill failed on the House floor Thursday night when Democrats united against it and a large group of Republicans also voted against it.
