A couple from Chhattisgarh's Kapu village has grabbed headlines for their unique choice of marriage. Instead of following the traditional rituals, they decided to swear on the Constitution of India at the time of their marriage. The couple expressed more faith in the constitution than traditional marriage customs.
According to The Times of India, Pratima Lare (bride) and Emman Lare (groom) tied the knot on December 18 without following community practices like 'Sat Phera' or 'Band Baja'. Their decision to give up rituals including 'sindoor' and 'wedding sutra' ceremonies has been applauded by many, including those from their own community.
The couple decided to take oath based on the Constitution of India, pledging to support each other throughout their lives. They gave their pledge in front of a portrait of Dr. BR Ambedkar, the founder of the Constitution. To mark the occasion they officially declared their union by exchanging garlands and marching around a statue of Dr. Ambedkar.
Explaining the rationale behind this unique choice, groom Eman Lahre said, “A wedding like this saves a lot of expense. As quoted by The Times of India, we decided to tie the knot with our families, avoiding unnecessary expenses.
The wedding has sparked considerable discussion in the state with many hailing it as a “meaningful approach to marriage”. Some suggest that such festivals can serve as an example to others. The couple's parents and community members have expressed their support, blessing the newlyweds for their unconventional choice.
The event was held at Kapu village in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district, about 350 km from Raipur and far from the bustling hub of Parliament House in Delhi. The couple, hailing from the Satnami community, chose December 18 for their wedding, coinciding with Guru Ghasidas's birth anniversary.
