President Biden on Tuesday he signed proclamations creating the Chuckwalla National Monument and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, which will protect hundreds of thousands of acres of land in California, in his last week in office.

“We're doing the most aggressive climate program in the history of the world,” the president said in the East Room of the White House, before addressing the nation's monuments. “Our natural wonders are the heart and soul of our nation.”
He said in his second week as president he signed an executive order “to establish the first conservation goal to protect 30% of all our land and water across America by 2030 … I call this national campaign America the Beautiful … over the years, we've given… England to Minnesota, Texas to Colorado, Arizona, Alaska.”

He added: “Over the past four years, I am proud to have kept my commitment to protect more land and water than any other president in American history.”

Chuckwalla National Monument will protect more than 600,000 acres of public land in the California desert near Joshua Tree National Park and the Colorado River, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

The Sáttítla Highlands National Monument will protect more than 224,000 acres of Northern California's Modoc, Shasta-Trinity and Klamath national forests and “provide protection to tribal lands, historic and scientific resources, flora and fauna rare. of important water resources,” according to the US Forest Service.
