Switch 2 controllers seem to work like mice

Early in the morning, Nintendo revealed the first look of the successor to the Nintendo Switch, apparently and appropriately named the Nintendo Switch 2. In the short video showing some differences from the previous one . As part of this, a brief view of the Switch 2 controllers – called joycons on the original Switch by Nintendo – shining over a surface as if it works like a PC mouse is presented.

There is no accompanying text or commentary to go along with this, so at the moment we can only speculate at best. A side view of the joycon appears to show what looks like an optical sensor or something similar. If so, this would indicate that the joycons can work somewhat like a PC mouse on a flat surface with the Switch 2.

In terms of gaming potential, this could provide a more precise control method for games that require fine movements. Games with manipulable cursors, such as Realtime Strategy titles, could simply use a mouse without needing to connect mouse hardware. It could even be used for shooters, but that would likely depend heavily on accuracy and speed.

There are even other games, such as Nintendo's own Super Mario Maker series, that struggled a bit with controller-only definitions, but could find new life with a capable, manipulable cursor.

Until Nintendo decides to showcase this feature (or dismiss this as speculation), it's just a guess job. The sooner we know new information about the system and its software in early April, according to today's video.
