There are some significant changes coming to Apple Intelligence notification summaries. With the latest developer previews of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has paused aggregated system notifications, especially from news and entertainment apps, while it works to improve them.
The company has also added a new message that appears when users turn on notification summary for the first time. It states that notifications are a beta feature and may produce unexpected results. Separately, the beta versions added a new option that allows users to decide on the lock screen whether they want to summarize notifications from the app. Finally, AI-generated alerts use italic text to further differentiate them from their non-aggregated counterparts.
Last week Apple told Engadget he was working on updating the notification summary. “Apple Intelligence features are in beta, and we are constantly making improvements with the help of user feedback,” Apple said. “A software update coming in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text displayed is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report issues if they see an unexpected notification summary.”
Notification summaries are one of the features introduced with the first release of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Shortly after being distributed to general users, they quickly drew negative press from Apple. It is noteworthy that BBC published several reports blaming the annotations for spreading misinformation. One particularly unflattering example was the brief claim that Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
