WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President-elect JD Vance met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Sunday, a day before he and President-elect Donald Trump are sworn in.
Vance and Han discussed a range of topics including fentanyl, trade balance and regional stability, the Trump-Vance transition team said in a statement.
Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the inauguration ceremony after winning the presidential election last year. Xi sent Han in his place.
Vance's meeting with Han follows a recent phone call between Trump and Xi. During the call, the two leaders discussed issues including TikTok, trade and Taiwan.
It was the first known call between the pair since Trump's election in November.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Trump has told advisers he wants to go to China after taking office.
If the trip goes ahead, it would mark his second visit to China as president. Trump went to Beijing in 2017 on a trip to Asia where he visited many other countries.
