U.S. stock futures rose on Donald Trump's inauguration as investors bet that a series of immediate actions by the new president would boost the economy, especially in areas such as the banking and energy sectors.
Traders were also likely encouraged by the news that Trump would not introduce new tariffs immediately on day one.
Dow Jones Industrial Average Futures gained 122 points, or 0.3%. S&P500 futures contracts added 0.3%. Nasdaq-100 Futures increased by 0.4%.
Regular trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq was closed for the Martin Luther King Day holiday, but futures trading was limited.
Bitcoin he jumped to a new record high above $109,000 on Monday.
“I've been doing this for 49 years, and we're probably going from the most anti-business administration to the opposite,” said Stanley Druckenmiller, president and CEO of Duquesne Family Office, in an interview during CNBC's special inaugural coverage. “CEOs feel somewhere between relief and dizziness… we believe in animal spirits.”
A series of executive actions will be announced on Monday that investors can evaluate for their impact on the economy. A trade memorandum is expected from the new administration it won't impose further duties. The memo demanded investigations into China, Canada and Mexico over unfair trade practices and currency policies.
Elsewhere, the president-elect will declare a nationwide energy emergency, according to an incoming White House officialaiming to reduce high costs. This will expand the president's legal ability to authorize drilling in Alaska and other areas.
Other executive actions to be taken on Monday are likely to include business deregulation and immigration restrictions.
Druckenmiller, considered one of the best hedge fund managers in history, has remained somewhat cautious across the market due to rising interest rates.
Trump will be sworn in on Monday at noon EST.
