Department of Government Performance (DOGE) an advisory commission led by billionaire Elon Musk has recommended deep cuts to federal agencies, but it may soon become official; Executive order Officially signed by US President Donald Trump
On Monday evening, Trump signed an executive order renaming the US Digital Service, created by former US President Barack Obama in 2014, as the US DOGE Service (USDS).
The executive order directs USDS to consult with USDS to form “DOGE Teams” of at least four employees within their agency within 30 days. Teams are typically led by a DOGE team leader; engineering An HR expert and a lawyer will be involved. The executive order will work with the USDS and the agency where they are positioned to implement Trump's DOGE plan.
Among other things, The executive order establishes a “software modernization” program to improve government network infrastructure and IT systems and provides USDS with “declassified” agency records; Access to software systems and IT systems is “lawful”.
The executive order creates the U.S. Doge Service Interim, an interim organization dedicated to “advancing (President Trump's) 18-month DOGE plan.” The entity is set to terminate on July 4, 2026.
It remains to be seen whether the executive order will survive the upcoming court battles. At least three lawsuits. DOGE, led by Musk, has been accused in federal court of violating the transparency requirements of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), a 1972 law.
