The twin-engine plane crashed in a residential area of Gramado shortly after takeoff, officials said.
A small plane has crashed in southern Brazil, killing all 10 people on board and injuring more than a dozen people on the ground, officials said.
The twin-engine Piper PA-42-1000 hit a chimney and the second floor of another building before crashing into a store near Gramado shortly after takeoff from Canela, Brazil's Civil Defense agency said Sunday.
Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite told a press conference that the owner and pilot of the plane, Luiz Claudio Galeazzi, was killed along with nine members of his family.
Leite said 17 people on the ground were injured, 12 of them are being treated at the hospital.
Galeazzi's company, Galeazzi & Associados, confirmed that the CEO and Galeazzi's wife and three daughters died in the accident.
“Luiz Galeazzi will forever be remembered for his dedication to his family and his excellent work as the leader of Galeazzi & Associados,” the company said in a LinkedIn post.
“In this time of great pain, Galeazzi & Associados is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support received from friends, colleagues and the community. Our condolences go out to all those affected by this tragedy in the community.”
Gramado, located in the Serra Gaucha mountains, is a popular holiday destination, especially during the Christmas season.
The crash comes a year after Brazil's deadliest plane crash in nearly 20 years when a twin-engine plane crashed in the southeastern city of Vinhedo, killing all 62 people on board.
