The crocodile made famous by its appearance in the 1986 film “Crocodile Dundee” has died, the Australian reptile and aquarium where it lived announced on social media.
Bert, the famous saltwater crocodile who appeared alongside Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski in the popular film, is believed to be over 90 years old.
Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, says an Instagram post that Burt died peacefully over the weekend, “marking the end of an incredible era.”
“Bert's life story is one of strength, resilience and a bold personality, just like the Top End itself,” it said. “Caught in the Reynolds River in the 1980s, Burt became one of the world's most famous crocodiles, appearing in Crocodile Dundee and helping to shape Australia's image as a land of stark natural beauty and exciting wildlife.”
The aquarium said Burt headed to Crocosarus Cove in 2008 and became a “fierce and passionate ambassador for crocodile education”.
“Known for his independent nature, Burt was a confident bachelor, an attitude he clearly demonstrated while working on the crocodile farm,” they said. “His passionate temperament earned him respect from keepers and visitors alike, as he embodied the raw and unbridled spirit of the sea crocodile.”

In the film, Hogan's character Mick Dundee trades the Australian outback for the concrete jungle of New York after meeting an American reporter, played by Kozlowski. Burt is seen in a scene where Kozlowski's character is attacked as she kneels by a stream.
Bert will be honored with a memorial at Crocosaurus Cove.
