A wired investigation found it. Google Maps is nearly impossible to use on the west coast.Especially since the start of the war. Users were told in the release that the navigation app would direct them inside the walls, avoid registering at time-consuming checkpoints, or drive onto restricted roads that could be dangerous for Palestinian users.
Part of the problem is inevitable in war: conflict increases the number of road checkpoints that make it difficult for any traffic service. In addition, A Google spokesperson told Wired that the company doesn't discriminate because it needs to know the citizenship of people who live between Israeli and Palestinian streets. The company is constantly working to improve its west coast services, a spokesperson said.
However, dozens of employees have told Google leaders to further improve map services for Palestinians, and as one current Google employee told Wired, many people in the West Bank have stopped using Google Maps altogether.
