It's Hyundai offer Choose a free CCS to NACS (North American Charging Standard) adapter for electric vehicle buyers so they can charge current models at Tesla Supercharger stations. This will allow owners to charge Hyundai models with a CCS port on Tesla's 20,000-vehicle Supercharger network once deliveries begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Hyundai is offering a free adapter to owners of 2024 and earlier Kona Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Ioniq hatchback models, as well as 2025 Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5N, and Kona Electric Genesis electric vehicles. You can get a free adapter through MyHyundai owner website. The adapters will be offered to anyone who purchased a Hyundai electric vehicle before January 31, 2025. Sister brand Kia is also offering free NACS adapters to select customers starting next year, and a full list of supported models should be available soon.
Automaker joins Ford offering this privilege to its users, and other manufacturers are likely to do the same in the near future. This is because the US government has recently announced that NACS is becoming an open industry standard that is likely to be widely used in charger networks across the continent.
Future models won't need the adapter, as Hyundai has joined a host of automakers in changing their charging ports to NACS. According to Tesla, this will start with the 2025 Ioniq 5, which will have access to Tesla Superchargers upon delivery. Older CCS-based models do not currently have access, but Tesla will likely enable it once the adapter ships.
This news is significant because Hyundai recently became the second largest seller of electric vehicles in North America after Tesla. The company currently sells four models: the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5N crossovers, the Ioniq 6 sedan and the Kona Electric SUV. Meanwhile, Kia offers the EV6 crossover, EV9 SUV and Niro EV.
