PARAMARIBO (Reuters) – Former Suriname President Desi Bouterse has died at the age of 79, the country's government said on Wednesday, nearly a year after he went on the run from authorities to avoid prison following his conviction for the murders of 15 political activists in 1982.
“The government has been informed of the family and its investigation into the death of Mr. D. Bouterse, former President of the Republic of Suriname,” Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin told Reuters.
