The war in Ukraine was one of the most deadly for journalists: more than one hundred journalists or media workers were victims of violence in Ukraine after the 2022 invasion of 'Yer Zakrzhevsky, Veteran Fox News, and Oleksandra Kuvinova, twenty -four years Ukrainian journalist who served Our retainer, both killed in the same attack that crippled me.
The President Zelensky knew my story, and one of the reasons for which he invited me to return was to demonstrate the stability of journalists who – as courageous warriors and civilians of his country, is a refuge in Russian aggression. In fact, journalists from all over the world continue to pour into Ukraine, looking for advanced lines, finding history, performing their work.
There was also a personal item for me. My escape from Ukraine after the bombing was incredible, but only sentenced to failure, but I somehow pulled it alive and all the way to my house in London, to my family. Return to Ukraine was a chance to return this most unlikely escape. To survive the many impossible events that were to happen to survive, only this time with a clearer head and more functional body. A chance to evaluate and be grateful for all the turns of fate and heroism that brought me home. It was important for me to resist everything that happened, not to look at and leave it in the past. As I said, I am a journalist, and the journalist cannot look.
There was even more in my history that it was necessary to tell about.
Thus, I organized a meeting with a doctor from a military clinical hospital in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine – a brave Ukrainian doctor who saved my life between the changes as an armed guard for the national army after the bombing.
It was in that hospital that in March 2022. My team of rescuers sent from abroad which our allies found me in bed, metal rods sticking out of my left thigh, with a tail attached to my skull, a piece of cigareta size fell into the throat , parts of my left eye are missing, the right leg amputated in the knee and deeply burns on most of my body. The Ukrainian doctor was dead, inflicted me, fearing that any passage on the bombed streets in the country could throw the shrapnel in the throat and kill me in several ways to get out of the hospital to cost me my life.
Finally, he agreed to let me leave, secured and killed together to make a trip possible. And now, on my unlikely, he will return to see him almost two years later, he turned again, waiting to greet me along with a few nurse who helped keep me alive.
I didn't recognize the doctor – I was close to death when we first met.
But he recognized me.
When he saw me, his eyes expanded, and his face is white, and he began to cry. He approached me and looked very much at my face as if I was not real.
As if he looked at the ghost.
“You went,” he said. “My God, you were gone. You don't have to be here. It's a miracle here.”
I hugged him and I told him he agreed with him. I left, bloody porridge, clinging to my heartbeat, and yet I was, 614 days later, walking vertically on the prosthetized leg, my scars on the face are almost invisible, looking outside as the healthiest person. I was at the end of the extinction but something pulled me back.
This book is about it.
