Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand announced on Friday provinces and territories that Ottawa will remove more than half of the federal internal trade barriers in motion, so that Canada is less dependent on the United States.
Anand announced this at an informal, virtual meeting of the internal trade committee, which is responsible for the implementation of the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA).
Ottawa removes 20 out of 39 other federal exceptions to CFTA related to government orders to encourage greater trade and possibilities to Canadian companies throughout the country.
This movement will take a little over a week before Canada could be hit punishing tariffs from your greatest trading partner.
Anand said earlier that the threats of US President Donald Trump brought a new sense of diligence to knock down the Internal Trade Barriers of the Canadian as never before.
Diana Gibson, the Minister of Economic Development of British Columbia, said that federal changes will encourage other jurisdictions to remove their own trade blocking bureaucracy.
“It is really great to see how the federal government comes to the table with such a substantive movement,” said Gibson. “I applaud Minister Ananda for bringing it forward and really showing this leadership at the moment.”
Gibson said BC is preparing to make changes over the next week to facilitate trade.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce called Anand encouraging, but noticed that CFTA exceptions are not the only trade barriers in Canada.
“Now there is time for the provinces to accelerate broadly mutual recognition, improving regulations and standards that make the flow of employees and goods unnecessarily difficult,” said Randall Podlasar, director of government relations at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
“In the face of tariffs and serious commercial disturbances, the use of the benefits of internal trade is too important that they can miss it.”

Anand was not available for an interview. Earlier she said that she cooperates with provinces to improve the mobility of the labor force and other rules, including regulations for drivers.
“We need mutual recognition of the rules throughout the country so that if you are a driver, you do not have to follow 13 different sets of recipes,” said Anand CBC Rosemary Barton Live at the beginning of this month.
