Three House Democrats in a “caucus” are calling for an end to the US-led investigation into the arms embargo against Israel.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Summer Lee, D-Pa., wrote to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), an independent agency that oversees maritime trade involving the US, regarding Spain. “a decision to deny entry to ships carrying weapons tied to the government of Israel and its ongoing massacres against the Palestinian people of Gaza.”

“This investigation is a blatant insult to our partners in Spain, which has only sought to confirm its national independence policies and uphold international law, including its treaty obligations to prevent genocide,” the far-left lawmakers wrote.

“It is bad enough that the United States is violating these obligations and its domestic laws by sending these weapons. We urge you to immediately stop this obstruction of justice and withdraw this flawed investigation.”

Spain, a longtime US ally and fellow NATO member, has said it will halt arms sales to Israel when its war with Hamas erupts in October 2023.

Since then, the Spanish government has been accused three times of refusing ships to dock at its port due to allegations that the ships were carrying weapons intended for Israel.

Tlaib, Bush and Lee are three of the most senior Congressional critics of the Israeli government since it began its offensive in Gaza.

Three House Democrats have repeatedly accused the Biden administration of inappropriately accommodating Israel, the US's closest ally in the Middle East.

They also argued that the US has no standing to investigate Spain's decision, saying “these actions do nothing to threaten the reliable maritime transport supply system that the FMC is tasked with protecting .”

Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, make a decision officially recognizing the state of Palestine earlier this year.
