“It is with great sadness that I confirm the tragic death of Correctional Officer Andrew Lansing following an inmate assault that occurred at Ross Correctional Facility this morning,” Chambers-Smith said in a statement.

“The loss of a worker is difficult, but to lose a family member on Christmas Day at the hands of someone in our custody is an unfathomable tragedy. Instead of going home after his operation to be with his family this holiday, Officer Lansing made a great sacrifice, and our facility will never be the same,” – Annette Chambers-Smith, Director of Rehabilitation and Ohio Amendment.

Chambers-Smith said Officer Lansing was a long-time, well-respected employee at the facility and that “his untimely death, on Christmas Day, is heartbreaking for his family, the entire family of Ross Correctional Institution , and our institution as a whole.”

“Officer Lansing was loved by his colleagues and known as a great support to his colleagues at RCI. We ask that you keep Officer Lansing's family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this stressful and difficult time,” the statement continued.

Rep. Mark Johnson, R-Ohio, also issued a statement, sharing his condolences, and calling Officer Lansing “one of the best correctional officers.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine he ordered that all flags be lowered in honor of Officer Lansing until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Chambers-Smith added that the Ross Correctional Facility is still operating under a suspended license, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol's investigation is ongoing.
