Congressional Democrats' use of X, formerly Twitter, has dropped significantly in the years since Elon Musk took over the site, a new report suggests.
More Republican lawmakers used X in 2024 than their Democratic colleagues, Quorum of the public affairs firm counted. Of the 20 most active accounts for members of Congress, only one — Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla. – hail from the left, with No. 15.
That's a big change even from Quorum's 2023 report, which came out more than a year after Musk bought the site — at the time. The 10 most effective congressional accounts were almost evenly split with six Republicans and four Democrats on the list. Now, they are all Republicans.

Many on the left have criticized Musk's ownership of X, accusing him of using it to support President-elect Donald Trump and right-wing causes. But Musk and his partners insist he's creating a user-driven experience that promotes free speech.
The report pointed to a 2023 survey that showed a significant decline in Americans who identify as Democrats using the tool.
“X use has been declining among the general public since Elon Musk took office — with Democrats driving the decline, according to another survey conducted early last year,” the report said. .
“After looking at the data, it's clear that the decline in usage isn't just from the general public. Social workers, especially those on the left, are also changing their social media habits. “

Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., is the only Democrat on X's top 20 congressional accounts list.
Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Pa., for example, was the top Democratic lawmaker in X in 2023 before his post frequency dropped sharply by 66% this year, the report said.
Action on X accounts for California Reps. Robert Garcia and Ted Lieu, both Democrats, dropped 35% and 26%, respectively.
In 2024, X's most frequently active accounts are those of Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
Republican lawmakers, as a whole, made 54.4% of X posts by members of Congress in 2024, compared to 45.1% for Democrats.
In 2023, congressional Democrats held 50.8% of legislative jobs in X, compared to 48.8% for Republicans, Previous Quorum report said.

It's important to note that it's common practice for congressional lawmakers to delegate control of their professional or personal X accounts — often both — to their staff.

But lawmakers like Cruz and Roy, along with X's third most effective figure, Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., is known for regularly interacting with other X users directly.
Frost, the lone Democrat among the top 20 X users of 2024, warned other supporters not to abandon the popular app to Republicans, in an interview. and Politico last month.
“If we drop X, it will help Elon with his goal of making the platform free of any progressive thought or the way we think about the world,” he said.
