Petition for sexual harassment against rejected president of the Senate of Nigeria

The petition, filed by Nigerian Senator, claims that sexual harassment by the chairman of the Senate was rejected.

Godswill Akpabio, one of the highest politicians in the country, denied the allegations against him by Natasha Akpoti-Udugan on Wednesday.

The Ethics Committee, which could examine the petition, indicated the procedural violations and the legal restrictions on the hearing thereafter.

“The petition is contrary to the rules of the Senate and cannot have fun,” said the chairman of the Ethics Committee Senator Neda.

He added that Udwagan personally signed the petition instead of approved by another person, violating the Senate order.

In an interview with Ariise Television on Friday, Senator Udwagan claims that Acpabio has made inappropriate progress for her during a visit to his residence in the southern Aqua Ibom, on December 8, 2023.

She also claims that Akpabio on a separate occasion has hinted that she should “take care of him” if she wants her requests to receive favorable attention in the Senate.

The Senator claims that Akpabio behaves as a teacher at the university who consistently failed his student, who has refused to sleep with him.

But it was denied by Acpaabio.

“I have not harassed any woman at no time. I was raised very well by my late single mother and always supported respect for women. I was even awarded the most appropriate gender manager in Nigeria,” he noted.

The issue raised a huge debate in Nigeria, with many calling for an independent investigation.

In a social media publication, one of Akpabio's predecessors as Senate President Bucle Saraki said the questions raised were too serious to simply be canceled.

Earlier on Wednesday, two groups of protesters gathered at the meeting in the capital, Abuzha – one supported Akpaabio and the other in support of his colleague, chanting '' Akpaabio must go. Sd

The Senator Udwagan uses the plenary session on Wednesday to present the petition that calls for Akpabio's behavior.

As a president, it was Acpabio who allowed Smougan to file the application.

Before becoming the Senate president less than two years ago, Akpabio has been the manager of the Oil State of Aqua Ibom for eight years, as well as the minister of the Niger Delta under former President Mohamadu Bukhari.
