2024 box office hits and misses: 'Villain' soars, 'Madame Web' flops


Many movies in 2024 grew at the box office, although some of them failed to get their expected releases.

Leading the pack was “Inside Out 2”. according to IMDb Professionalthe animated film grossed nearly $1.7 billion worldwide.

The animated sequel follows the main character, Riley, as she leaves her childhood and enters her teenage years. With age came changes in emotions, introducing the newest stars of the second film – anxiety, jealousy and envy.

The star-studded cast included Maya Hawke (Anxiety), Ayo Adebiri (Jealousy), Amy Poehler (Joy) and Tony Hill (Fear).

Blake Lively sued Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment, retaliation and infliction of emotional distress.

It was the second biggest domestic and international film “Deadpool and Wolverine” by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. According to IMDb pro, the film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and $636 million domestically.

Below, we take a look at some of the other best and worst movies of 2024.

Deadpool

“evil”

The highly anticipated film Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erevo, was released in November and has already grossed $580 million at the worldwide box office. The musical grossed $392 million domestically.

The second part of this series called Wicked: For Good will be released in November 2025.

“Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”

“Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” both did very well at the box office.

“The Dune: Part II,” starring Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, brought in $714 million worldwide and $282 million domestically. The third installment of the Dune series is expected to be released in 2026.

Godzilla X-King: The New Empire grossed $571 million worldwide and $196 million domestically.

“It Ends With Us”

“It's Over With Us” by Blake Lively It topped the box office on its initial release in August.

The romantic drama starring Lively and Justin Baldoni exceeded expectations with a $50 million debut.

“It's Over With Us” was released at the same time as “Deadpool and the Wolverine,” starring Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds. The two films came in at No. 1 and No. 2, marking the first time in 34 years that a husband and wife duo topped the box office. The last time audiences enjoyed such a moment was in 1990, when Bruce Willis' “Die Hard 2” and Demi Moore's “Ghost” took the top two spots.

While “I Ends With Us” did impressive numbers at the box office, the publicity tour has fueled speculation about drama between Lively, Reynolds and Justin Baldoni, who directed and acted in this film.

Lively has since sued Baldoni for sexual harassment, retaliation and infliction of emotional distress.

“red one”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans' “Red” are in the middle of IMDb's 2024 career box office list.

The holiday film, which opened in November and is still in theaters, has brought in nearly $182 million worldwide and $95 million domestically.

“Autumn Man”

Fall Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, didn't do as well as expected.

The film opened in May and grossed $181 million worldwide and nearly $93 million domestically.

Both stars were hot off the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, but their remake of the classic TV show didn't fare nearly as well as Blunt's “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” Gosling's, both released last year.

“Madame Web”
