A GROWING STORYTHE STORY IS DEVELOPING,
The accident happened when Jeju Air was landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea.
A passenger plane has skidded off the runway and crashed at an airport in the South Korean city of Muan, killing at least 29 people, according to Yonhap and AFP.
The accident happened on Sunday when a Jeju Air flight was landing at Muan International Airport, Yonhap reported.
It was carrying 175 passengers and 6 pilots and was flying from Thailand.
“So far we have confirmed that 29 people have died in the accident,” Lee Hyeon-ji, a local fire department official, told AFP.
“But this number may rise due to the number of casualties,” he said.
One photo shared by local media showed thick clouds of black smoke billowing from the plane. Another showed part of the jet's tail engulfed in flames that appeared to be part of the runway, with firefighters and emergency vehicles nearby.
Lee said rescue officials were evacuating passengers from the back of the plane.
At least two people have been found alive so far, Yonhap said, adding that rescue operations are ongoing.
South Korean President Choi Sang-mok ordered “all rescue operations” in Muan.
“All allied organizations … must gather all available resources to save the workers,” he told government officials in a statement.
The crash is believed to have been caused by “contact with a bird, which made the landing gear difficult” as the plane attempted to land at an airport in the country's southwest, Yonhap reported.
