Ukraine's claims strike in the Russian Kursk against the backdrop of reports of fresh invasion

Ukraine said it had hit a Drones Command Department in the Kursk area against the backdrop of reports of fresh attempts to move to Russia.

The attack on Sunday against the unit is located near the Russian village of Tautkino, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

Many Russian military bloggers also report that the Ukrainian forces have tried to cross the village by posting images – still unverified by the BBC – to vehicles drilling tank traps at the border.

The reports come after Moscow claims in April that it has regained control of the entire region, nine months after the Ukrainian forces began a surprising invasion. Kyiv insists that there are still soldiers working across the border.

On Monday, the Ukrainian forces fired missiles above the border and crossed mining in special vehicles, according to bloggers.

“The enemy blew up the bridges with rockets at night and started an attack with armored groups in the morning,” said blogger Rvvoenkor, according to the Reuters agency.

“Mina's clearing vehicles began to make passages in the mining fields, followed by armored vehicles with troops. A heavy battle is fought on the border.”

In a statement on Monday, Ukraine said: “Nine months after the start of the Kursk operation, Ukraine's defense forces maintained a military presence on the territory of the Russian Kursk region.”

Although there was no official response from Moscow, some military bloggers also posted maps showing opposite forces trying to cross the border in two places to Tyotkino – near where the drone's command unit was struck.

Meanwhile, in sums – about 12 km across the border from Tautkino in northeastern Ukraine – local authorities called on people to evacuate two settlements, Reuters reported.

Ukraine initially made a surprise in Kursk in August 2024 to create a buffer zone and to protect sums and surrounding areas, while hoping to use it as a negotiating chip in future negotiations.
