Jawbreaker candies are known for their hardness, often causing injuries if bitten. A university student in Canada recently experienced the literal truth behind their name.
Javeria Wasim, a 19-year-old student, was admitted to the hospital with a broken jaw after trying to bite into the rock candy. As a result of the injury, she was unable to eat solid food for over a month.
Javeria Wasim was shopping with a friend when she came across the famous Jawbreaker candies, known for their rock-hard shell and enormous size – some as big as a snooker cue ball.
“We got a giant one, the biggest they had,” Wasim said people Magazine.
Before biting into this enormous treat, they even asked the shop owner if it was safe. But when Wasim decided to give it a try, everything quickly fell apart.
“I just bit it and it made a hole, and my jaw started hurting,” she explained, adding that her friend immediately noticed that one of her teeth was loose and another was damaged in the front.
Moments after the incident, Waseem and her friend called for an ambulance after realizing the damage had gone beyond her teeth. At the hospital, X-rays and a CT scan confirmed the worst: her jaw was broken, requiring emergency surgery the next day.
“I cried a lot; Everything was a blur,” Wasim recounted people Magazine.
During the hour-long procedure, surgeons repositioned her jaw and placed a stabilizing bar on her upper and lower gums, locking it in place for six weeks. Daily Mail.
“I had to have surgery, they put my jaw back in place and put a bar on my upper and lower gums and closed it up,” she explained.
Still reeling from the shock, Waseem reflected on her experience and said, “I had (jaw breakers) as a child, but I never saw anyone biting adults.
Unfortunately, the challenges of a liquid diet and post-surgery have caused Waseem to give up candy altogether.
Determined to raise awareness, Waseem is now warning others about the dangers of eating jawbreakers, hoping her ordeal will serve as a warning to avoid similar injuries.
