Officials say a Quebec man died this week after a boat exploded at a South Florida marina and also injured six people.

The explosion occurred on Monday, and the man was identified as 41-year-old Sebastien Gauthier, Arielle Callender, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), said in a statement to CBC News.

Gauthier was one of seven passengers aboard the 37-foot (11.3 m) vessel at the Lauderdale Marina in Fort Lauderdale.

According to preliminary information, the ship exploded after starting the engines, Callender said.

Six other passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.

Callender said the FWC's investigation is ongoing.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Gauthier's family and friends at this difficult time,” she wrote.
