According to the US Geological Survey, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck western China near the border with Nepal on Tuesday.
Chinese state media reported that the quake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles in Dingri County in China's Tibet region shortly after 9 a.m. This was reported by the state news agency Xinhua said that there were dead people in at least three townships.
Several earthquakes were felt in the area, including in Nepal.
The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded in Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet.
The Himalayan region is prone to strong earthquakes. In 2015, about 9,000 people died as a result of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal.
