A shark attack off Egypt's Red Sea coast has killed one tourist and injured another, officials said.
In a statement, the North African nation's environment ministry said Sunday's incident happened north of Marsa Alam, a resort town in eastern Egypt popular with divers.
He added that the attack took place in “deep water outside the designated swimming area”.
While the ministry said only that the two victims were foreigners, AFP reported that they were Italian nationals, citing an unnamed Italian foreign ministry source.
The dead 48-year-old man is a resident of Rome, and the injured is 69 years old, according to AFP.
Egyptian officials said the two tourists were transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, about 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.
The Marsa Alam swimming area will be closed and the incident is under investigation, authorities said.
In the past 10 years, there have been four confirmed deaths due to shark attacks, according to data compiled by the independent Shark Research Institute.
The last incident occurred in June 2023. near Hurghada and is involving a 24-year-old Russian.
