January 2025 has finally arrived, and with it comes the return of the show you made three years ago and It felt like it would never come back.– Of course we are talking about. Compensation– Apple TV+'s Sci-Fi Mysteries of 2022 that came out of nowhere and Instantly became a fan favorite– Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger all the time and fans are eagerly waiting for season 2. This is now coming up on January 17th. Since then
Adam Scott, star of CompensationUnderstandably, Scott is no stranger to hit TV shows, but also CompensationHe went from starring in a weird show that no one knew about to leading one of the most talked about shows on TV, and suddenly fans were coming up to him on the street. He heard the lingo from shows all over the world. And everything about the long-delayed second season is top secret. Over a video chat last month, io9 spoke with Scott about all of that. He talked about his first reaction to season 2, what fans liked and how things are changing around the Lumon office, and don't worry. The interview contains no spoilers for season two.
Germain Lussier, io9: Fans had to wait nearly three years to find out what happened next with Compensation team, but I wonder How long did you have to wait to get the script and see what happened? And what was your reaction when you received the script?
Adam Scott: Before there was an actual script, Dan (Erickson, showrunner) would often plan the season. So I had a rough idea of the direction and arc of the season before we started writing. It will be fun to see how far he can take the story this season. Because Season 1, the story originally went a little further than where it ended, and then Ben (Stiller, executive producer) was like, “Oh, that line, 'She's still alive,' that's a good place. To close out the season,” Dan found that to be the season's defining line. Seeing how far we can go and what it will look like will be really interesting and fun. So I have to find that information before any kind of script.
io9: And while waiting People come to you asking when the show will come back? Something like that?
Scott: That's right, and I think it was September or something. Apple announced a release date of January 17th, and it's really cool to be able to tell people the date. Because many times a day people ask me where season two is. and i got it It's been a long time It's nice to be able to say “January 17th,” but now that it's coming in a few weeks, it's great. It's great that people have been as patient as they have. And they were willing to wait this long.
io9: We really have no choice. But I agree
Scott: Yes, that's true.
io9: So I watched a few episodes from this season and didn't spoil anything. It felt like Mark was completely dedicated to finding the answer. Obviously, you are always the main character. But in this season But I almost see him as a stand-in for the audience. He's not kidding. Do you agree with that? And how has that changed your performance this season?
Scott: I think the information that Mark found out at the end of Season 1… Season 1, we saw him slowly Growing disillusioned with Lumon, a place he believed in with all his heart. And his entire identity and life were rooted in this place. And he became disillusioned with it. But I think as episode nine progressed and they got away with it. He felt like he had reached the pinnacle of what he thought Lumon's depravity could be, so I thought of researching this piece of information. Destroy any expectations in what he thought was possible without citing words “Evil,” or bad things that companies or people will do to each other So I think we're starting season two with him being thrown back into this situation. To which he was now completely indifferent. Now he was at a point where he needed answers. And they need to know what they should do with this information. And is there a way to take it outside?
io9: And it's a unique show because you have Innie and Outie. And they are clearly different people. So I wonder Am I right in thinking that playing Innie Mark is more fun?
Scott: I don't know, I like playing both. I thought they were just different parts of the same person. And I think it's all the same guy. But there are some things I like playing with both of them.
io9: I understand. Nowadays, there are many shows. especially streaming programs which is difficult to find a program that will be popular Looking back on Season 1, at what point did you realize, “Oh, I'm on the show that everyone's talking about”?
Scott: We created season 1 in a bubble, we didn't know who would watch it or like it. when it comes out We all held our breath. But I think when I started hearing words from the show like “innie” and “outsider” like culture on podcasts or referenced everywhere. I think that's when I knew we were a little stuck. And it was very strange to hear that. All of a sudden when it comes to scripts and stories or whatever. We need to start sending secure emails with code words. Throughout Season 1, which takes place over the course of a few years. No one cares what we're doing. We didn't have to hide anything, and suddenly it was this kind of closed secret thing that we were doing. And it's really fun and really weird to suddenly have this show that people are so intensely interested in.
io9: And as someone who has done a lot of great TV shows. What is it about? Compensation Does that feel different?
ScottA: I don't know. I think the world Dan and Ben created has a unique look and feel. And I think it's a testament to viewers that they're willing to stick with a show like this that throws so many curveballs and mysteries at them.
