U.S. Olympic runner Fred Kerley was arrested in south Florida after a confrontation with police, authorities said.
Body camera footage released by Miami Beach police shows Kerley arguing with a group of officers late Thursday before a physical confrontation broke out. Kerley was knocked to the ground, where the officer punched him several times and then used a Taser on the 29-year-old sprinter, police said.
According to the arrest report, officers were investigating an unrelated active scene when Kerley approached the area and attempted to get to his vehicle, which was parked nearby. The officers told Kerley to go around the area, but Kerley began arguing with them, which led to a scuffle with police.
Officials said four officers tried to detain Kerley as he tried to avoid arrest. After being stunned with a Taser, Kerley was taken to a local hospital and then to the Miami-Dade County Jail.
Kerley is charged with battery, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. Online court records did not immediately list an attorney for Kerley, and USA Track & Field, the national governing body for U.S. track and field, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Kerley won a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze in the same event at the Paris Olympics in 2024. He also won six medals at the World Championships in Athletics.
