At least 4 killed, hundreds of wounded, after an explosion at the Iranian port, says TV

State television reports that a huge explosion and fire shook the port of southern Iran, killing at least four people and hurting over 500 others.

The gwark took place at the port of Shahid Rajaei on the outskirts of the Bandar Abbas, the main facility of container shipments for the Islamic Republic, which serves about 72 million tons of goods per year.

Social media films showed black, wavy smoke after the explosion. Others showed glass blown from buildings kilometers from the epicenter of the explosion.

The state material showed a wounded crowded in at least one hospital, and ambulances arrived when the doctors threw one person on a stretcher.

The authorities offered no reason for the explosion a few hours later, although the films suggested that everything lit in the port was very flammable.

Industrial accidents take place in Iran, especially in aging oil facilities, which are fighting for access to parts under international sanctions. But Iranian state television specifically excluded any energy infrastructure as causing or damaged in an explosion.

Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, a provincial disaster management clerk, told Iran state television that the first respondents were trying to reach the area while others tried to evacuate the site.

Hasanzadeh said that the gust comes from containers in the port of Shahid Rajaei in the city, without developing. State TV also announced that the building was collapsed due to the explosion, although no immediate details were offered.

The Ministry of the Interior also announced that it began investigating the incident.

The Shahid Rajaei port in the province of Hormozgan is about 1050 kilometers southeast of the capital of Iran, Tehran, in the Hormuz Strait, the narrow mouths of the Persian Gulf, through which 20 percent of all oil turnover passes through.

In 2020, the suspicious Israeli cyber attack aimed at the port. He appeared after Israel said that he thwarted the cyber attack focused on water infrastructure, which he attributed to Iran.

A gwark took place when Iran and the United States met on Saturday in Oman in the third round of negotiations on the rapidly developing nuclear program in Tehran.
