A 14-year-old boy died and four people were injured in a knife attack in Austria.
It happened around 4:00 pm local time (15:00 GMT) near the main Vilach Square, southern town near the border with Italy and Slovenia.
The suspect is a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker and has been detained, AFP News reports, citing a police officer.
“A random man attacked passers -by with a knife,” police spokesman Rainer Dionysio told AFP.
A delivery worker who drives his car to the attacker has helped prevent more injuries, a police spokesman told the ORF, the national operator of Austria.
Police have not excluded a second striker to participate, Orf added.
The Austrian media reported that the suspect, whose identity was not confirmed by the police, may have had a valid residence permit.
The driver said two of the four injured were in serious condition.
Any motive or connection between the knives and the five victims is not yet known, although the ORF has reported that police in extremism have been drawn up for investigation.
Governor Peter Kaiser from Carinthia – the region where Villach is located – described the attack as “unthinkable atrocity”.
