Bengaluru doctor performs life-saving CPR on passenger after cardiac arrest at airport


A normal evening at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) took a dramatic turn on Sunday when a life-threatening emergency unfolded, prompting a hasty rescue effort.

Nephrologist Dr Garima Aggarwal of Manipal Hospital, Varthur, reportedly came to the aid of a fellow passenger who was in cardiac arrest and administered CPR in time and saved his life. Times of India.

Dr. Aggarwal, who was on his way to attend a family function, noticed a commotion at a neighboring boarding gate. What initially seemed like a minor incident quickly escalated when she realized a middle-aged man had collapsed and bystanders were frantically calling for help.

Dr. Garima Agarwal immediately sprang into action to leave her belongings and go to the place. “The man had no pulse and was completely unresponsive,” she later shared TOI. Relying on her medical expertise, she began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and called for additional medical assistance.

Rescue efforts

The situation worsened when Dr. Aggarwal discovered that the man's airway had been blocked by vomit. Acting quickly, she turned him to remove the obstruction before resuming chest compressions. Her efforts continued until the airport medical team arrived with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The combined efforts of Dr. Aggarwal and the medical team included multiple defibrillator shocks and emergency medicine. After nearly 15 minutes of intensive resuscitation, the man remained unconscious, but his pulse returned to normal. He was immediately taken to a private hospital where his condition recovered.

Dr. Aggarwal's swift and decisive action was praised by passengers and onlookers alike. Despite the demanding situation, she managed to catch her flight with the heartfelt thanks of many on board.

Reflecting on the incident, Dr. Aggarwal said: TOI“At times like this, our training takes over. It's nice to know that my skills can be changed.”
