We test open wireless headphones based on five key criteria, comparing models with similar style and prices. These criteria are design, sound quality, characteristics, voice calling performance and value.
Design
We evaluate not only how comfortably the headphones fit (ergonomics), but also their build quality and how well the controls are implemented. We also look at water and dust resistance ratings.
Sound quality
We evaluate the sound quality by listening to a set playlist of music tracks and comparing the open headphones to the top competing products in their price range. Sound characteristics such as bass definition, clarity, dynamic range and the natural sound of the headphones are key factors in our assessment.
Characteristics
Some great-sounding open-ear headphones aren't loaded with features, but we consider the extra features. These include everything from noise canceling and transparency (ambient sound mode) modes to special sound modes to ear detection sensors that automatically pause your music when you take the headphones out of your ears.
Voice calling performance
When we test voice calling performance, we make calls on the noisy streets of New York City and assess how well the headphones reduce background noise and how clearly callers can hear your voice.
Value
We determine the value after evaluating the volume of the headphones against all these criteria and what the buds can deliver compared to other models in their price range.
