Bill Clinton left the hospital after being treated for the flu

Former US President Bill Clinton will return home for Christmas after being released from a Washington hospital where he was treated for flu.

The 78-year-old Democrat was admitted on Monday afternoon with a fever.

A spokesman said Clinton was released Tuesday in gratitude for the care he received at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

A spokesman said Clinton sends everyone his warmest wishes for a healthy and happy holiday season. Clinton, who served two terms as president from 1993 to 2001, campaigned this fall for Vice President Kamala Harris, who was running for president.

Since leaving the White House, Clinton has been dealing with some health issues.

In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery after suffering from long-term chest pain and shortness of breath. In 2005, Clinton returned to the hospital for surgery on a partially collapsed lung, and in 2010 he had a pair of stents implanted in his coronary artery.

Clinton responded by switching to a mostly vegan diet, where he lost weight and saw improvements in his health.

In 2021, he was the former president hospitalized for six days in California while being treated for an infection unrelated to COVID-19 when the pandemic was still at its peak.
