Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith and President Trump met on Saturday and discussed the “mutual importance” of the US-Canada power relationship and the hundreds of thousands of American jobs supported by exports to Alberta.
“In the past 24 hours I had the opportunity to meet with President (Trump) at Mar-a-Lago last night and on his golf course this morning,” Smith wrote in a post on X. “We had a conversation kind and constructive at the time. I highlighted the same importance of the US – Canadian energy, and in particular, how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy goods from Alberta.
He continued, saying he had similar conversations with “several key allies” of the incoming Trump administration where he was heartened to hear of their support for “a stronger relationship with security and Canada.”
“At the level of Albertans, I will continue to engage in constructive discussions and negotiations with the next administration with federal and state elected officials from both parties, and I will do my best to advance the interests of of Alberta and Canada,” said Smith. “The United States and Canada are both proud and independent countries that have one of the most important security alliances in the world and the largest economic partnership in history. We need to preserve our independence. as we nurture this important partnership for the benefit of Canadians and Americans for generations to come.

Smith wrote about the meeting at X, nearly a week after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation amid growing pressure from within his Liberal Party and added criticism about his economic performance and threats posed by Trump.
However, as Trudeau announced on Monday his intention to step down as prime minister once the Liberal Party he leads elects his successor, it is the biggest move yet. Trump's rush to unite Canada — and his proposed 25% tariffs on imports — came from the premier of Canada's most populous province, Ontario.
