Charles Dolan, the television pioneer who founded HBO and Cablevision, has died at the age of 98


Television pioneer Charles F Media companiesincluding Home Box Office Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corp., deceased. He was 98 years old.

In a statement to Newsday, his family said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Charles Dolan, the visionary founder of HBO and Cablevision.

A family spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that he “died peacefully of natural causes and surrounded by loved ones.”

“His legacy will live on as both a pioneer in the television industry and a dedicated family man,” the spokesman added.

Dolan's legacy at Cable TV including the founding of Box Office, later known as HBO, in 1972 and the founding of Cablevision the following year. He also launched the television station American Movie Classics in 1984.

He was also the founder and chairman emeritus of the Lustgarten Foundation in Uniondale, New York, which conducts pancreatic cancer research.

According to Newsday, Dolan, a Cleveland native whose primary home was in Cove Neck Village on Long Island, New York, also had controlling stakes in the companies that owned Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers. .

The pioneer of cable television is survived by six children, 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Helen Ann Dolan, died last year.
