Women's private liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusettsis offering a course called, “White Supremacy in the Age of Trump” this spring, when President Trump returns to the White House.
“This course analyzes the history, spread and current manifestations of the white supremacist movement by examining the ideological, tactical and strategic aspects, and its relation to mainstream politics,” the course description says.
“Students research and discuss the relationship between white supremacy and white privilege, and explore how to build a civil rights movement to counter the white supremacy of US Students in develop writing and research skills while dealing with multiple cultural practices.develop the ability to understand the range of possible responses to white supremacy, their legal forms. and outlaw,” it continues.
The four-credit course, offered by the college starting in 2019, is also available to students at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the Massachusetts' Five College Consortium program.

In previous years, the course syllabus included required reading from “antiracist” academics, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Robin DiAngelo.
One paper assignment asked students to answer the question, “How did the ideologies of white supremacy help elect Donald Trump and what did the 2016 election teach us?” and “Why is liberal democracy threatened by white supremacy?”
Education taught since 2019 by Loretta J. Ross, visiting assistant professor at Smith College.
Ross, a social justice activist who was once the school's “Activist-in-Residence,” has “dedicated many years to women's rights and reproductive justice,” and is credited with helping to create the phrase, “reproductive justice,” according to the National Museum of Women's History.

Ross previously blamed Trump's 2016 election for holding back the civil rights movement.
“What we are seeing is what happened after the success of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. People who felt they had lost control of this democracy and their will to protect white rights and white supremacy created a decades-long strategy to regain power,” he wrote. 2017 post on his website.
“To implement this plan, they not only brought together people who opposed the civil rights movement, diehard segregationists, but also thought they should instigate cultural wars against LGBT rights. , women's rights, abortion rights, immigrants, workers' rights, environmental justice.

Smith College and Professor Ross did not respond to a request for comment.
When asked what made the college offer the course in Campus ChangeA spokesperson for the school cited its Statement on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression, stating that “Faculty at Smith College may freely pursue any subject of intellectual or artistic research and shall not placed under restraint, discipline or intimidation.”
“Faculty has the right to complete freedom in creative work and research, and to share results through publication, performance and exhibitions. In the classroom, faculty are also free to determine what content is relevant. and learning style for their professional subject; consistent with professional standards,” reads the statement.
A spokesperson also told Campus Reform that “faculty propose courses based on their own initiative and interests, and courses have been approved for addition to the catalog by the Academic Priorities Committee.”
