The Denmark Post Office, Postnord, must terminate all the supplies of letters at the end of 2025, citing a 90% decrease in the volumes of letters from the beginning of the century.
The decision leads to 400 years from the company's letters service. 1500 mailboxes in Denmark will begin to disappear from early June.
Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen tried to calm the Danes, saying that letters could still be sent and received throughout the country. A company said it was ready to take supplies.
Postal services across Europe are struggling with the decline in the volumes of letters. The German Deutsche Post said on Thursday that he had captured 8,000 jobs in what he calls a “socially responsible way.”
Deutsche Post has 187,000 employees, and staff representatives said they were afraid of more cuts.
Denmark had a universal postal service for 400 years until the end of 2023, but since digital mail services were mastered, the use of letters was drastically reduced.
Public services send communications through an application for digital publications or other platforms, and after Nord Denmark says the letters market is no longer profitable.
The number of letters fell from the beginning of the century from 1.4 billion to 110 million last year.
The decision will affect the oldest people. Although 95% of the Danes use the digital mail, reported 271,000 people still rely on physical mail.
The Danish MP Pelle Dragsted has accused the privatization of this move and complained that this move would be in a disadvantageous position people living in remote areas.
Postnord said about 1,500 of his workers will lose their jobs outside the workforce of 4600.
The company said it would pass its focus to collection supplies and that any postage stamps purchased this year or 2024. It can be restored for a limited period in 2026.S
Chief Executive Officer Kim Pedersen said the Danes became more and more numeric and the decline in the volumes of letters became so pronounced that it dropped by as much as 30% in the last year alone.
Postnord also works in Sweden. It is 40% Danish property and 60% of Swedish.
