In the summer of 2023, the Biden administration announced its plan to certify devices with logo indicating powerful cyber security. Now, as Biden spends his final couple of weeks in office, The White House launched the US Cyber Trust Seal. The green shield logo will appear on any product that passes accreditation tests set by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The program will open “soon” to companies, allowing them to send products to an accredited laboratory for compliance testing. “The U.S. Cyber Trust Seal embodies public-private cooperation,” the White House said in a statement. “It brings businesses, consumers and the U.S. government together by incentivizing companies to create products that are secure according to established security standards, and gives consumers an additional measure of confidence—through labeling—that their smart device is cybersecure.” Some companies, such as Best Buy and Amazon, plan to display labeled products to make them easy for consumers to find.
Steps to get the program up and running have been ongoing for the past year and a half. In March, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the program in a bipartisan, unanimous vote. Last month, the Commission granted conditional approval to 11 companies to act as cybersecurity label administrators.
The White House's initial announcement included plans to create a QR code linked to the product database – it is unclear whether this aspect will be developed further. The QR code will allow customers to check the relevance of the product. cybersecurity checks.
