Dozens injured in lift accident at Spanish ski resort


At least 30 people were injured, some seriously, in a chairlift accident in the Spanish ski resort of Astun in the Pyrenees mountain range, emergency services and local media said on Saturday.

Nine of the injured are in a very serious condition, another eight are moderately injured.

State broadcaster TVE reported that around 80 people remain trapped in the lift. The cause of the incident is still unknown.

Several helicopters are operating in the area to rescue the skiers still trapped and take the injured to nearby hospitals.

Images and videos appeared on social media showing several people lying on the snow under the lift.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked” by news of the crash, expressing his sympathy for the victims and their families.
