Dozens of hospitalized when the hot weather hits North America

Dozens of people are hospitalized for heat -related diseases, as the first major heat wave descends to Eastern North America in the summer.

More than 150 people became ill at a school graduation ceremony in Patterson, New Jersey on Monday, according to US media, as the mayor of the city declared a state of emergency.

In Washington, six people needed hospital treatment during a concert by the South Korean group Stray Kids, according to CBS News, the US partner of the BBC.

The heat warnings are in force from the US Midwest to the east coast, as well as in parts of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia in Canada, affecting over 160 million people a week.

To the south along the eastern coast of the United States, dozens in North Carolina have sought treatment for heat -related injuries.

Local news media reported that at least 41 people – including children – were hospitalized in Central North Carolina.

Local authorities in New Jersey called out the diseases of a couple of graduation ceremonies – an incident with “mass victims” because of how painful they are. This led to the cancellation of some graduation ceremonies in the area.

Patterson Mayor Andre Sig has declared a state of emergency because of the heat, canceling all entertainment activities in the area and opening cooling centers.

Experts warn that rising temperatures in parts of North America can worsen the risk of heat associated with heat, especially due to high humidity levels.

Mixing the danger is the extended duration of the event, with a little night relief – temperatures in some Eastern cities may remain above 80F (27C) overnight.

The heat wave arrives less than a week after the official start of summer. Forecasters say several places can experience record maximums.

The Middle Atlantic Region is expected to face the most intense conditions until Thursday, followed by the East Ohio Valley on Friday. A few consecutive days of depressing heat in these areas can significantly increase health risks.

The US National Meteorological Service (NWS) has warned people to “take action when you see symptoms of heat and heat stroke.”

People are advised to stay outside the sun during the hottest time of the day, drink a lot of water and check vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those with existing health conditions.

Although the magic of extreme heat affects many parts of North America every summer, this heat wave can surpass June records in places.

In New York, the maximums on Tuesday can reach 101F (38C), which would be equal to the highest June temperature registered in the city dating back to 1966.
