Germans are expected to vote on February 23 after the collapse of the centre-left coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
US billionaire Elon Musk has supported the right wing A German alternative (AfD) as Europe prepares for elections in February.
The AfD is second in the ideological polls and could turn out a majority on the right or left of the centre. However, Germany's main, leading parties have vowed to reject forming a coalition with the AfD at the national level.
“Only the AfD can save Germany,” Musk wrote on Friday in his social media, X.
Europe's largest economy is expected to vote on February 23 after the collapse of the centre-left coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Musk, who is set to join US President-elect Donald Trump's administration as an adviser, has previously expressed support for far-right, anti-immigration parties in Europe.
The German government said it was aware of Musk's comments but declined to comment on its regular meeting.
Scholz told reporters at a press conference that freedom of thought “also applies to billions of people” and “means you can say things that are wrong and without good political advice”.
Musk, the world's richest man, has said he is helping of the AfD last year when he attacked the German government for its treatment of undocumented immigrants.
Last month, Musk called for the dismissal of Italian judges who questioned the government's legality to curb illegal immigration.
'Unacceptable'
German lawmakers from the main parties were outraged by Musk's comments.
“It is threatening, outrageous and unacceptable that an important person in the future US government interferes with the German campaign,” Dennis Radtke, a member of the European Parliament of the Christian Democratic Union of the center, told the Handelsblatt daily.
Radtke called Musk “a threat to democracy in the West”, criticizing the world's richest man for turning X, formerly known as Twitter, into a “slingshot disinformation”.
Alex Schaefer, a lawmaker at Scholz's left-wing Social Democrats, said Musk's comments were “absolutely unacceptable”.
“We are very close to the Americans, but now courage is necessary for our partner. We refuse to compromise our election campaign,” Schaefer told the Tagesspiegel daily.
Former Finance Minister Christian Lindner from the pro-business Free Democratic Party, said some of Musk's ideas “encouraged” him but urged the Tesla boss to “not rush to think too far”.
“Although immigration control is important in Germany, the AfD is against freedom, business – and is an extremist party,” the politician said.
