Things can look bleak with all the challenges for the EU in the depths of winter: the threat of a trade war with the US, weak political figures in Germany and France, European farmers risking protests over the Mercosur deal, an uncertain outcome in Ukraine. Budgets are being tightened for the conflict, as well as for group homes and governments. But despite these threats or perhaps because of them, European sentiment is up: 51 percent of Europeans trust the EU, the highest level since 2007; While 44 percent have a positive image of the bloc, a figure that has remained more or less stable since 2010. These figures are according to a recent Eurobarometer poll.
