(Reuters) – The European Commission is re-examining its probes into tech giants including Apple (NASDAQ:), Meta (NASDAQ:) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:) Google, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
Tech giants have urged US President-elect Trump to challenge the European Union's regulatory probe against them.
The impact of Trump's presidency is part of the study, one source told the newspaper, explaining that his victory did not trigger it.
The review may lead Brussels to reduce or change the list of probes, and it will cover all cases launched from March 2024 under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), said the report, citing sources.
The DMA is one of the strictest regulations aimed at controlling the tech giants' market, dictating what the world's biggest platforms can and cannot do, and can impose fines of up to 10% of a company's annual revenue.
All decisions and potential penalties will be suspended while the review is completed, but technical work on the cases will continue, the newspaper said.
Regulators are now awaiting political guidance to make final decisions on Google, Apple and Meta, the report said.
Apple, Meta, Google and the European Commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The DMA came into force in 2022 with the aim of curbing the power of Big Tech and ensuring a level playing field for smaller competitors.
Last week, Meta ditched its US fact-checking program in one of its most extreme moves to control political content on its services. This comes as CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed a desire to mend the fences with the incoming Trump administration.
