Four people were killed after the cabin of the mountain cable died to the ground near Naples in southern Italy, emergency services say.
Another person was “extremely seriously injured” in the crash of the Mountain Mountain and was diverted to hospital, staff said.
The Italian media reports that one of the cables supporting the cabin high upwards, the mountain clicked while the cable car went around the valley.
President of the region Vincenzo de Luca said the victims were all tourists.
De Luca added that bad weather conditions, including fog, wind and rain, make it difficult for rescue workers to reach the area where the cabin has crashed at high altitude.
The Italian media earlier on Thursday announced that the cable line had stopped and more than a dozen were rescued from a second cabin, which stopped down the valley.
The footage showed that the passengers were wiped in harness.
Mayor of Castellammare di Stabia – where the cable car is located – said it was thought to have clicked a grip cable.
“The emergency brake down the stream was working, but obviously not the cabin that would reach the top of the hill,” he told the Italian media.
He added that there were regular inspections for the safety of the car line on the cable.
The company that manages the service, the EAV public transport company, described it with the crash as a “tragedy” on social media.
