The 2024 presidential election has dominated the news cycle this year and not only are the majority of voters optimistic about the outcome, but they are also more optimistic for the future of the country. And while half think it was a bad year, the number saying it was good is the highest it has been since 2020 (the end of the first year of the epidemic).
When it comes to the future of the country, 55% are very or very optimistic about the future. That's 2 points from 2022. Between 2021 and 2022, confidence in the country's future increased by 10 points. The question was not asked in 2023.
Overall, 45% have no hope or no hope at all.

The current numbers are driven by party divisions — a lot of them Republic they are hopeful for the future of the country (86%), while most Democrats (72%) and Independents (54%) are not.
In 2021, things changed among activists, albeit to a lesser extent, with 6 out of 10. Democrats say they are optimistic, while 7 in 10 Republicans and 6 in 10 Independents say they are not.
“Since the 1990s, attitudes about the future have been strongly associated with isolation,” says Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who runs the Fox News Poll with Democrat Chris Anderson. “However, there is more general optimism this year than we have seen in the past, as the fear and sentiment of the past few years seems to be waning.”
Looking back to 2024, four in 10 (40%) say it was a good year for their family, while half (50%) say it was a bad year for 10 points. is an improvement from -14 last year (39% positive, 53% negative) and much better than in 2020, when it was underwater by 44 points (23% positive, 67% negative). From 2012 to 2019, more voters felt more positive about their year than negative.

By a 36-point margin, voters say 2024 was a bad year for America as a whole (28% favorable vs. 64% unfavorable), but that's better than 2020's 65-point net rating (13% positive, 78% negative). Since 2018, when the question was first asked, feedback on the country's year-end report card has been lacking.
Democrats (50% home, 42% state) are more likely Republic (34%, 19%) and Independents (33%, 21%) feel 2024 was a good year for them and the country.

Another tip of hope…
Half of voters say “hope” describes how they feel about the 2024 presidential results (54%) – the highest of any other sentiment including relief (50%), surprise (50%), happy (48%), scared (46). %), depression (40%), and anger (39%).

Conducted December 6-9, 2024 under the direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News poll includes interviews with a sample of 1,015 registered voters randomly selected from from the national voter file. Respondents spoke to interviewers via telephone (125) and cell phones (699) or completed an online survey after receiving the text (191). Results based on a full sample of registered voters have a margin of sampling error of ± 3 percentage points. Sampling error associated with results among subgroups is high. Aggregate weighting is applied by age, race, education, and geographic area to ensure that the number of respondents is representative of registered voters.
