New French prime minister François Bayrou has chosen Eric Lombard, head of the state-backed financial group Caisse des Dépôts, as finance minister, giving him a key role in trying to craft next year's budget.
Bayrou's predecessor, Michel Barnier, was he was expelled by the French parliament in a vote of no confidence earlier this month due to opposition from left and right political parties to his deficit-reducing budget.
The members of Bayrou's cabinet were revealed on Monday night after days of conflict between him and President Emmanuel Macron, who officially calls ministers after the prime minister's proposals.
This is a growing story.
